A Sentiment

Are relationships concrete? Or abstract?

One given relationship can look much different from another and many labels exist to describe the dynamics between two people. But are we mere role players? What substance bonds two people together? Is friendship but a symbolic concept? I am asking these questions b/c it seems that autistic children have a hard time engaging in pretense play and they also have troubles remembering/understanding the arbitrariness of some/most social situations and norms. What is this social construct anyway? A concept that appeals to even animals and insects?

Friends come and go. One second you are best buddy with someone and the next, you don't talk with them for years. To be expected? Some folks, or I'd argue most of us, do take comfort in knowing that they have friends somewhere out there. Knowledge sometimes beats experience.

Relationships are always changing, just like everything in life really. However much we'd like to hold onto things and have them unchanged, time always ends up winning. Time pushes and ripples. Perhaps you'd like to believe that there are things which remain static in life. You'd be right in saying that, but I guess I am talking more about the specificity of our lives. I mean eventually, we'd all have to confront and accept some kind of changes. Yesterday is merely a memory. An imprint. A thought. Relationships lose intensity and perhaps even meanings over time. Everyone treads a different path. Crossroads are frequent, and separation does happen. Analogy. Life might seem like a bus terminal at times. You think you reached destination, but in reality, the terminal is yet another transit point, another occasion to journey on, moving forward, whatever that means.

Despite that, the people in our lives should be cherished. Each moment with them counts. Don't lose sight of those who matter to you. It's not always obvious to know who matters to us or tougher still, whom do we matter to. That's where words of affirmation kick in. A beautiful love language. Literally the only love language among the 5. You communicate love by speaking it. Speak your love. Cheesy? Cheesy beats tough love hands down any day. Do not fear what the recipient might think. Do not let anyone undermine your feelings. Love is meant to share after all. Give.

Things change. They never stay the same. For whatever lows out there, up you can go too. And no matter wherever you are in life, just know that you can always start again. Take a leap of faith. Also, it's time to stop floating about aimlessly in space. Try finding meanings in the meaningless, concretizing the abstract and verbalizing ideas and sentiments. Most importantly, do engage in relationships because you can.
